GEORGE MACKENZIE, A PUPIL, WINS UKELA'S ANNUAL LORD SLYNN OF HADLEY MOOTING COMPETITION

Chambers is pleased to announce that George Mackenzie, a pupil at Francis Taylor Building, and his fellow team-member, have won UKELA's annual Lord Slynn of Hadley Mooting Competition. The final was judged by Carnwath LJ. Chambers enjoys a strong tradition of success in the UKELA moot and is delighted to see the return of the trophy.

The moot focused on two issues. The first was whether the Environment Agency had (i) created and (ii) unjustifiably breached a legitimate expectation that it would rely on a Town Council's position as to whether waste operations on an exempted site were causing a nuisance for the purposes of the Waste Framework Directive. The second was whether, in view of the fact that judicial review was available, the absence of a right of appeal on the merits in relation to the deregistration of an exemption under the Environmental Permitting Regulations 2007 was compatible with Article 6 ECHR.
